The shallow emerald green waters, obstacle courses and floating bars have made it one of the most popular things to do on the entire Gulf Coast. Today, Crab Island is nothing more than a raised sandbar. At one point, it actually was an island, but sands from the Gulf of Mexico have eroded it over the years to turn it into what it is today. In most places on Crab Island, the depth of the water is about 1-4 ft. It’s the perfect place to anchor your boat down and have a good time out in the sun!
Stretching out 1,262 feet into the Gulf of Mexico, The Island Pier provides breath taking views of magnificent sunrises and sunsets. The Island Pier, along with the Boardwalk, are the activity center of the beach area. Park at the Boardwalk where you can shop, eat, and play. With a children's playground and volleyball courts, picnic tables, a wide beachfront, and fishing pier, it is easy to enjoy a day at the beach that offers something for everyone in your family or group.
This is the only museum in the world dedicated to the collection, preservation and exhibition of artifacts and memorabilia associated with Air Force Armament and its platforms of delivery. There are over 29 different aircraft that have found a home here. Admission is free.
Dolphins and sea turtles (and yes, sharks!) frequent the area's waters. Dolphin watching is particularly good during late spring/early summer and they are more active in the morning and late afternoon hours. Sea turtle season runs from May to October and is the perfect time to go on a turtle walk with volunteers who teach the respect for these immense creatures. Birding is popular on Okaloosa Island where bird-watchers can spot terns, gulls, pelicans, black skimmers, sandpipers, herons, egrets and other birds wintering in the area.
From jet skiing to snorkeling to surfing, there are so opportunities to enjoy the Gulf's crystal clear waters . Deep sea and offshore fishing is very popular! Dolphin and sunset cruises, pontoon rentals, and kayaking adventures are all available in the area, along with many more opportunities to enjoy the water!
